Kamailio is an open-source SIP server project, developed continuously since 2001 and released under the GPLv2 or later. Formerly associated with the names SIP Express Router (SER) and OpenSER, the project brings together a collaborative community focused on building secure, extensible tools for real-time communications and unified communications services.
The Kamailio server can handle thousands of call setups per second and supports deployments ranging from systems with limited resources to carrier-grade platforms. Its capabilities include SIP routing, load balancing, failover, authentication, accounting, least-cost routing, and services such as registration, presence, instant messaging, and WebRTC. It supports voice, video, and text communications, IPv4 and IPv6, and protocols including UDP, TCP, SCTP, TLS, and WebSocket. Additional features include IMS extensions for VoLTE, an embedded XCAP server, and integration with databases and other backend systems.
Organizations can use Kamailio to build VoIP platforms, SIP-to-PSTN gateways, PBX systems, and media-server deployments. The project provides software downloads, documentation, modules, community support channels, and business-directory resources.
