The Kansas National Guard is comprised of two branches, the Kansas Army National Guard and the Kansas Air National Guard. Established on September 18, 1947, the Kansas Air National Guard works alongside the Army National Guard to provide a range of products and services. The Adjutant General’s Department is responsible for overseeing the operations of the Kansas Army and Air National Guard, as well as the Kansas Division of Emergency Management and the Kansas Homeland Security Office.

Led by Brigadier General Michael T. Venerdi, the department coordinates multi-agency assets, ensures readiness of Army and Air Forces, and provides rapid emergency management response and homeland security capabilities. The Kansas Army National Guard consists of various units, including the Joint Forces Headquarters, 35th Infantry Division, and the 635th Regional Support Group, among others.

The Kansas Air National Guard is organized into the 184th Wing based in Wichita and the 190th Air Refueling Wing in Topeka. Additionally, the Kansas Division of Emergency Management plays a crucial role in providing mitigation advocacy, response coordination, and recovery programs to protect the state's civil sector. Overall, the Kansas National Guard is dedicated to protecting life and property within the state and safeguarding national interests both in Kansas and beyond
