Karate Leeuwarden

Iryoku is a karate association based in Leeuwarden and Stiens, offering instruction in the full-contact Shinkyokushin style founded by Masutatsu Oyama. Established in 1993, the club has four dojo locations and welcomes children, young people and adults. Its name reflects the qualities it encourages in students: willpower, commitment, dedication and perseverance.

Lessons combine kihon, or basic techniques, kata and kumite, with an emphasis on respect, spirit, self-control and physical and mental resilience. Special sessions include kumite-focused training, a 35+ class for older participants, stamina training using boxing bags and exercise circuits, and early-morning workouts featuring running, conditioning, stretching and meditation. Classes are held throughout the week in Leeuwarden and Stiens.

The teaching team includes founders Shihan Gilbert and Sensei Arend, both qualified karate instructors, alongside assistant instructors. Iryoku also offers prospective members a free trial lesson and provides information and enrolment options through its website. The club presents karate as a disciplined path to personal development, fitness and perseverance, encouraging students to work steadily toward their goals.
