The Kay Motsepe Schools Championship is an annual South African school sports competition that brings together more than 13,000 teams. Sponsored by Sanlam in partnership with the Motsepe Foundation, it uses sport to support youth development, leadership and community engagement, while giving young athletes a platform to showcase their talents and build life skills. The championship’s featured offering is school football, with the 2024 programme including boys’ under-19, boys’ under-14 and girls’ under-14 categories.
Schools can register to take part and access information about the league, fixtures, results and upcoming events through the championship website. The Motsepe Foundation makes R20 million available annually for the championship. Winning schools can receive funding for infrastructure development: the national under-19 winner is eligible for R3 million, while the winning under-14 boys’ and girls’ schools each stand to receive R1 million.
These awards are intended to help improve school infrastructure and the teaching and learning environment. The championship combines competitive opportunities for pupils with potential benefits for participating schools and their communities
