About Kelpinor
Kelpinor | Sømna is a pioneering brand that specializes in the large-scale cultivation of sugar kelp (Saccharina Latissima) and winged kelp (Alaria Esculenta). As a startup originating from NTNU in Trondheim, Kelpinor is dedicated to providing sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels and traditional protein sources. Located in Gildeskål municipality, which is renowned as the northern Norwegian epicenter for seaweed cultivation, Kelpinor operates state-of-the-art production facilities.
Through interdisciplinary development processes and collaborations with academic environments such as NTNU Trondheim and the accelerator program Arctic Ignite, Kelpinor ensures innovative and environmentally-friendly practices. Their journey begins by handpicking selected mother plants, which are then transported to their laboratory in Våg, just outside Bodø. In the lab, the seedlings are nurtured in tanks before being attached to ropes and submerged in the sea during the winter months.
Within just five months, the kelp grows from a mere 10 mm to an impressive 1. 5 meters before it is harvested and provided to their partners. With a commitment to sustainability and growth, Kelpinor is transforming the future of food and energy production.
