About Keltenmuseum Hallein
Keltenmuseum Hallein is an archaeology and city museum in Hallein, Austria, dedicated to Celtic history and art, Salzburg’s prehistory, and the development of the historic salt-mining town. It is one of Europe’s largest museums focused on Celtic culture, presenting finds from the Iron Age burial grounds and settlements of the Dürrnberg alongside the story of salt production that shaped the region. Visitors can explore reconstructed mine passages, burial chambers, gold jewellery, and exhibitions on ancient life, archaeology, and Hallein’s history.
The museum also encompasses the Stille Nacht Museum Hallein, located in the former home of Franz Xaver Gruber, composer of “Silent Night,” and cares for an extensive archive related to the carol and its composer. Its public program includes guided tours, workshops, family-friendly learning activities, school and cultural partnerships, and special events. Accessible facilities support visitors with reduced mobility, while the museum shop offers replicas of Celtic artefacts and souvenirs. A garden provides an outdoor space to relax.
