The Kerouac Project is an Orlando nonprofit that supports writers through an immersive residency in Jack Kerouac’s former home in the College Park neighborhood. Kerouac lived there briefly in 1957–58, when On the Road was published, and typed the original manuscript of his sequel, The Dharma Bums, in the house. Today, the project invites writers to follow in the home’s creative footsteps by living and working there for four to seven weeks.
The residency offers a quiet place to write, with no rent and few distractions, giving participants dedicated time and space to focus on their work. Writers can apply for a residency through the organization. The Kerouac Project also shares news and updates through its blog and newsletter, and welcomes support through donations.
Its mission centers on nurturing writing while preserving the connection between an important literary setting and the creative community. The project is operated by The Jack Kerouac Writers In Residence Project of Orlando, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
