The Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony (KFN) is an independent, interdisciplinary research organisation dedicated to understanding crime, prevention and related social issues. Its work generates evidence-based findings to improve methods and models for explaining, anticipating and addressing developments in crime. The institute translates research into practical recommendations and knowledge for crime prevention, control and management, sharing its findings with the public, society and policymakers.

KFN’s research is organised into three units: the Causes of Deviance, which examines the origins of rule-breaking and criminal behaviour; Victimology, which focuses on people affected by crime and its wider social effects; and Institutions of Social Control, which studies the criminal justice system and organisations such as courts, police and youth and family services. A dedicated methods department develops and examines research methods and statistical approaches for observing and analysing crime.

The institute also communicates its work through journal articles, books, research reports, policy statements and presentations. It hosts academic events, including a criminological colloquium, and publishes updates about its research and activities.
