About Khamai
Khamai Foundation is an Ecuadorian non-governmental organization (NGO) established in 2022. Dedicated to reversing the tropical biodiversity crisis and mitigating the effects of global warming, Khamai aims to rewild heavily threatened biodiversity areas and promote research and conservation of tropical biodiversity. Unlike other NGOs or the Ministry of Environment in Ecuador, Khamai focuses on conservation issues and areas that are often overlooked.
With a special focus on amphibians and reptiles, which are highly susceptible to environmental degradation, Khamai protects these vulnerable species while safeguarding the hundreds, if not thousands, of other species that coexist with them in their reserves. Their flagship project is the creation of the Pitalala Reserve, a privately protected area in the upper Amazon rainforest. The reserve's objectives include rewilding the Ecuadorian Amazon, combating deforestation, mitigating global warming, providing an alternative income source to gold mining, and promoting the research and conservation of Amazonian biodiversity.
