KHMW, or the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities, has been dedicated to promoting science and bridging the gap between science and society since 1752. As the oldest scholarly society in the Netherlands, KHMW has continuously adapted to the times. Initially, it focused on organizing and awarding prizes for scientific inquiries.

Since 1841, the society has been housed in the historic Hodshon House, located in Haarlem, opposite the renowned Teylers Museum. In recognition of its 250th anniversary in 2002, KHMW was granted the royal designation. The structure of KHMW includes two branches: societal members, who represent individuals interested in science, and scientific members, who are responsible for the society's scientific activities.

Additionally, international scholars are included as foreign members. The society's primary focus has always been its awards, which are independent and cover a wide range of levels, from student projects to lifetime achievements. Every year, approximately 140 awards are presented during festive ceremonies held at the Hodshon House.

KHMW also facilitates the exchange of ideas through lectures, symposiums, and conferences, fostering both formal and informal interactions. Many of these events are published and shared with the public. The society also manages several foundations and funds which support scientific research and education.

Detailed financial reports, as well as the society's statutes and policies, are readily available to the public. The KHMW is guided by a dedicated board and is honored to have King Willem-Alexander as its protector. Additionally, KHMW collaborates closely with the National Thinktank, creating connections between the academic and professional worlds.
