!Khwa ttu is a San heritage and learning centre on Grootwater Farm on South Africa’s West Coast, described as the “embassy” of the San of southern Africa. Its award-winning Heritage Centre explores human origins and contemporary San life, with the San sharing their history and culture in their own words. Through exhibitions, guided tours led by San guides and self-guided trails, visitors can learn about San heritage, indigenous knowledge and the surrounding landscape.
The site also welcomes visitors to a garden-fresh restaurant and shop, and offers overnight stays in cottages and eco cabins set among the fynbos. Trails for hikers and bikers, opportunities to encounter local wildlife, and conference facilities add to the experience.
Beyond tourism, !Khwa ttu works to restore dignity and cultural pride, preserve indigenous knowledge and develop skills that help San people thrive in a changing world. Its heritage, conservation and responsible tourism work creates learning opportunities for young San from across southern Africa and supports indigenous initiatives through partnerships and shared expertise.
