About Kia Mau Festival
Kia Mau Festival is a highly regarded contemporary Indigenous arts festival that brings winter warmth to the Wellington region. Now in its seventh iteration, the festival offers an array of exciting and diverse performances and events. From fierce theatre to a hip-hop musical set in the urban streets of Te Whanganui-a-Tara, the festival showcases the talent of both local and global Indigenous artists.
Wāhine Māori will be taking the stage to share their powerful stories, and customary Indigenous dance will be reimagined in a contemporary setting. Kia Mau Festival has a strong focus on uplifting mana whenua artists, tangata whenua, and tangata moana. The festival will take place from 02 to 17 June 2023, featuring artists from Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), Ōtepoti (Dunedin), Te Moana-nui-a-Kiva (Pacific), Canada, and the Te Ūpoko O Te Ika A Maui (Wellington) region.
