The Kilkenny Age Friendly County Initiative is a local programme within Age Friendly Ireland, launched in 2010 to help make Kilkenny a better place for older people to live, work and participate. It brings older adults, public bodies and community partners together so their views inform local plans, services and facilities. The programme is overseen by a multi-agency Strategic Alliance and works closely with the Older People’s Council.
Its work includes developing age-friendly public spaces, improving access to information and physical activities, and supporting integrated community services and memory clinics. The initiative also promotes age-friendly towns and provides local directories of services. Notable projects include improvements to MacDonagh Train Station, such as accessible routes, parking, signage, staff training and a pedestrian crossing. Kilkenny City received Age Friendly status from the World Health Organisation in 2014; the county’s libraries achieved the status in 2023. Through partnerships and practical projects, the initiative aims to make local services and public places more accessible, welcoming and responsive to people as they age.
