The Riordan King of the Mountain is an Australian sporting event held in Wycheproof, Victoria, and promoted as “Australia’s Toughest Foot Race. ” Its signature challenge asks competitors to carry heavy bags of wheat one kilometre to the summit of Mount Wycheproof, described by the event as the world’s smallest mountain. The original race ran from 1978 to 1988, with competitors carrying 63.
5-kilogram bags. After a 35-year break, the Wycheproof-Narraport Football Club revived the carnival in 2023, restoring a distinctive local tradition and welcoming participants and spectators from across Australia. The event returns on Saturday, 26 September 2026, with 10 race categories, including the Riordan King and Queen of the Mountain, offering challenges for a range of competitors.
Beyond the races, the program includes a community picnic, medal presentations, food trucks, free children’s entertainment and a big-screen broadcast of the AFL Grand Final. The carnival combines endurance sport with community celebrations, making it a day out for competitors, families and visitors
