About kingyoen.com
Yamato Kingyoen, a goldfish specialist based in Yamatokoriyama, Nara Prefecture, celebrates the city’s long history as one of Japan’s major goldfish-producing areas. Local goldfish keeping is said to have begun when Yoshisato, son of feudal lord Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, brought goldfish from Kai Province to Koriyama. Techniques developed by lower-ranking samurai were later passed to local farmers, and the area’s water resources helped establish its reputation for goldfish cultivation.
The company operates the Koriyama Goldfish Museum, opened in 1982 by its former representative, Masaharu Shimada, as a year-round place to see goldfish. The museum displays around 40 varieties, from ancestral forms to premium breeds, including rare types preserved through the dedication of breeders’ associations and enthusiasts. Yamato Kingyoen also offers online shopping and shares updates through its goldfish blog. Its activities include the annual Goldfish Festival exhibition and judging event, with competition information, award results, entry forms, and rules provided for participants.
