Kipushi Mine, located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has a rich history as a leading producer of copper and zinc. Originally established by Union Minière in 1924, it became renowned as the world's richest copper mine, transitioning over time to Africa's most prolific underground source of copper, zinc, and germanium. Following its acquisition by the state-owned Gécamines in 1967, Kipushi operated until 1993 when it was placed on care and maintenance due to various challenges.
Spanning nearly seven decades, Kipushi produced approximately 6.6 million tonnes of zinc and 4 million tonnes of copper, along with notable quantities of germanium and lead. Its historical output primarily originated from the Fault Zone, which remains a crucial area rich in minerals. In recent years, Ivanhoe Mines has revitalized the site, discovering significant new mineral resources, including the promising Big Zinc deposit. Kipushi plans to operate sustainably, utilizing hydroelectric power to minimize its environmental impact while continuing its legacy in the mining sector.
