Kishindo Martial Arts Academy teaches Bushi-Kai Kishindo, a modern budo rooted primarily in the Okinawan karate styles of Shotokan and Goju, with additional influence from Daitō-ryū. Founded in 1975 by Howard Owen Davis, Kishindo combines techniques and principles drawn from several martial arts, including self-defense, kata, traditional weapons, philosophy, and meditation. The name means “the way of joining the spirit and energy, mind and body.”
The academy offers classes for children, teens, adults, and families, with instruction suited to students’ ages and skill levels. Younger beginners learn foundational punches, defensive strikes, kicks, forms, and practical lessons in confidence, focus, judgment, and avoiding danger. Advanced youth and adult classes progress to higher-level techniques and, where appropriate, traditional weapons. Family classes let parents and children train together.
Kishindo also provides free women’s safety classes for women’s groups. These sessions cover awareness, personal safety habits, avoiding unsafe situations, and basic self-defense, with age-appropriate guidance on recognizing unsafe dating situations. Classes can be arranged by contacting the academy.
