KM3NeT

KM3NeT is an international research infrastructure building the next generation of neutrino telescopes in the deep waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Designed to open a new window on the Universe and advance understanding of neutrinos, the facility will ultimately comprise detector volumes ranging from megatons to several cubic kilometres of clear seawater. Its two telescopes serve complementary scientific goals.

ARCA searches for neutrinos from distant astrophysical sources, including supernovae, gamma-ray bursts and colliding stars. ORCA investigates neutrino properties using particles produced in Earth’s atmosphere. Both instruments use arrays of thousands of optical sensors to detect faint light generated when neutrinos collide with matter and create charged particles.

KM3NeT also hosts equipment for Earth and sea sciences, enabling long-term, online monitoring of the deep-sea environment and seafloor. The collaboration supports scientific research through publications, open data and software, public outreach, educational activities and access to its infrastructure for external users.
