Thorsten Knappenberger’s Soil Physics and Hydrology research group is based in Auburn University’s Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences. Led by Professor Thorsten Knappenberger, Ph.D., the group investigates how soil, water, and environmental systems interact, connecting processes within soil pores to patterns across fields and watersheds. Its research examines water movement and contaminant transport in agricultural, urban, and natural landscapes, with work spanning agricultural water management and irrigation, watershed hydrology, environmental water quality, soil properties, stormwater management, green infrastructure, wetlands, and precision agriculture.
The group combines field measurements, laboratory experiments, and modeling to support understanding of these processes and sustainable water management. Its teaching connects soil physics and environmental science with hands-on learning, field experience, and practical data skills. For Spring 2027, the site also lists an Auburn University course in AI and Machine Learning in Environmental Science, designed to apply these methods to environmental problems without requiring a coding background. Through workshops and the Alabama Stormwater Forum, the group shares research with stormwater professionals and consultants.
