About KnowTheGov
KnowTheGov is a free, independent, nonpartisan civic library that helps people understand the U.S. federal government through official records. It is not a government website, and its resources are available to explore without an account. The service helps users identify their senators and House representative by address or by selecting a state and congressional district. Representative profiles include voting and legislative records, with options to explore current officeholders or see who served in past years.
KnowTheGov’s library covers the U.S. Constitution and its 27 amendments, with dates and concise explanations, as well as legislation in the 119th Congress. Users can browse bills by issue, date, and status, read official summaries, and follow recorded votes and other actions. The site also explains how a bill becomes law, using a detailed legislative record as an example. Its U.S. history section explores events from 1763 to 1877 and links readers to original documents, including the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Emancipation Proclamation.
