About Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority
Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA) is a public entity established to provide protection against the harmful effects of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. Under the Nuclear Regulatory Act No. 29 of 2019, KNRA has the power to grant, amend, and revoke authorizations, ensuring regulatory control over radiation activities.
Previously known as the Radiation Protection Board (RPB), KNRA inherits the powers and responsibilities of its predecessor, expanding its regulatory scope. The history of radiation protection in Kenya dates back to 1948, with the passing of the Radiation Protection Ordinance. The current legislation establishing KNRA was enacted in 2020.
Driven by a vision of safe and secure nuclear technology, KNRA's mission is to regulate the use of radiation and nuclear technology, prioritizing the safeguarding of society and the environment. With core values of professionalism, reliability, innovation, and teamwork, KNRA is dedicated to upholding integrity in its operations.
