Knutsford ‘Royal’ May Day is a cherished annual celebration in the town of Knutsford, held on the first Saturday of May. This vibrant event traces its origins back to 1864, initiated by the Rev. Robert Clowes with a procession and the crowning of the May Queen. The event earned its 'Royal' title in 1887 from King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, solidifying its status in local culture.
The festivities are marked by a traditional procession that features horse-drawn vehicles, a favored practice reflecting the town's historic charm. Unique customs, such as ‘sanding’ the streets with colorful motifs, create a visually stunning celebration that captures the community's spirit. Past May Queens and their Crown Bearers add to the event's historical richness.
Sustained by the generosity of local donors and businesses, Knutsford Royal May Day continues to thrive amid challenges, including a recent pandemic-induced hiatus. The local committee’s commitment ensures this time-honored tradition remains a highlight of Knutsford's calendar.
