Kindernierenzentrum Bonn is Germany’s first outpatient center dedicated to pediatric nephrology, founded in 2020 by pediatric kidney specialists Gesa Schalk and Bernd Hoppe. It provides specialized care for children and young people from southern North Rhine-Westphalia and northern Rhineland-Palatinate, from infancy through young adulthood. Its experienced, multidisciplinary team includes nephrology-trained nurses, child psychologists and nutrition advisers, with support from therapy, social-service, music, art and education professionals.
The center offers routine diagnosis and treatment across the full range of pediatric kidney conditions, alongside specialist consultations and nephrology outpatient services. Care includes sonography, urotherapy and all common dialysis methods, including hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. The team also supports patients and families before and after kidney transplantation and provides other forms of renal replacement therapy. Its approach combines medical expertise with psychological, nutritional and practical support for children, young people and their families. The center also shares patient information, news and updates about its services and activities, and works with partner organizations to help make care and treatment visits more supportive for families.
