Kokonjärvi

Kokonjärven Suojeluyhdistys is a local lake conservation association established in 2013 to improve the health of Kokonjärvi, Urjala’s second-largest lake. Located in the municipality’s southwest, the approximately five-square-kilometre lake is shallow and vulnerable to pollution. Its condition has declined over past decades, and algae blooms often color the water in late summer, particularly in sheltered bays. The association brings together people interested in the lake’s wellbeing and works to support its diverse natural environment and abundant birdlife.

Its activities include water-level and water-quality monitoring, bird observations and counts, and wetland projects in the Kokonjärvi catchment area. Members also take part in practical conservation work, including maintaining wetlands, providing nesting rafts for birds, and organizing shoreline and waterway projects. The association shares lake news, monitoring results, photographs, and information about its projects and events. It also coordinates dredging opportunities and offers reed-cutter rental and fishing-gear tags.
