About Kon-Tiki2
The Kon-Tiki2 Expedition is a groundbreaking initiative launched in November 2015, aiming to explore the capabilities of balsa rafts in modern ocean navigation while conducting vital scientific research. This ambitious project involved two balsa rafts—Tupac Yupanqui and Rahiti Tane—crafted from Ecuadorian logs and assembled in partnership with the Peruvian Navy. Over 114 days and approximately 4,500 nautical miles, the expedition sailed from South America to Easter Island and partially back, gathering data on climate change, marine life, plastics, and pollution in Pacific waters.
Led by Torgeir Higraff, the crew faced the challenges of extreme weather patterns influenced by an El Niño year, demonstrating the rafts' seaworthiness throughout their journey. The expedition concluded with a successful rescue operation by the Chilean Armada, enabling the crew to return safely. Through collaboration with various research organizations, the Kon-Tiki2 Expedition not only showcased the enduring legacy of ancient maritime technology but also contributed significantly to our understanding of environmental issues affecting the Pacific Ocean.
