Richard Kuhlenschmidt Gallery was a contemporary art gallery founded in Los Angeles in 1982. Over its decade of operation, it presented exhibitions by emerging and established artists, helping introduce audiences to a wide range of contemporary practices. The gallery began at Wilshire Boulevard, moved to Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood, and later operated from 17th Street in Santa Monica. Its exhibition program included paintings, photography, sculpture, drawings, prints, and installation-based work, alongside thematic group shows and curated projects.
Artists featured included Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince, Jim Isermann, William Leavitt, Allan McCollum, Matt Mullican, James Welling, Barbara Bloom, and Nayland Blake. The gallery also organized exhibitions such as “Picture Perfect,” “Los Angeles 1970–75,” and “Common Market,” and produced related materials including exhibition posters, postcards, brochures, and publications. In 1985, it held a benefit exhibition organized with Joe Bishop, and later collaborated with other venues and organizations on exhibitions. The Richard Kuhlenschmidt Gallery closed in November 1992, though a subsequent 1995 exhibition by Jack Pierson was presented at Bergamot Station in association with Track 16.
