About Kuopion Isänmaallinen Seura
Kuopion Isänmaallinen Seura is a Finnish local-history and cultural heritage association founded in 1883. Its purpose is to promote research into the history and folk traditions of communities in the Savo region, share the results, and preserve memories and oral accounts. The society has a long collecting tradition: it organized a network of local agents to gather folklore, historical objects and documents, and established the Kuopio Museum in 1884, where the collections were stored.
Today, the association supports research in its field through small grants, publications, lectures and training events. It also arranges local heritage excursions, creating opportunities for people to engage with the region’s past. The society publishes the Aarni series and supports other publications related to its areas of interest. Its publications cover subjects including Kuopio’s history, wartime experiences, family stories and regional traditions, and are available through the Kuopio Museum shop or by ordering from the museum. Through research, publishing and public events, the association helps document and share Savo’s history and cultural memory.
