Am 22. März 1933 eröffnete das NS-Regime in Dachau eines der ersten Konzentrationslager. Bis zur Befreiung am 29. April 1945 waren mehr als 200.000 Gefangene aus über 40 Nationen im KZ Dachau und seinen Außenlagern inhaftiert, mindestens 41.500 Menschen starben dort an Hunger, Krankheiten, Folter, Mord und den Folgen der KZ-Haft. Dank der Initiative der Überlebenden konnte das ehemalige Häftlingslager im Mai 1965 in einen Gedenk- und Erinnerungsort umgewandelt werden. Ziel der KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau ist es heute, an das Leiden und Sterben der Häftlinge zu erinnern und eine Auseinandersetzung mit den nationalsozialistischen Verbrechen zu fördern. Trägerin der KZ-Gedenkstätte ist die Stiftung Bayerische Gedenkstätten, eine Stiftung des öffentlichen Rechts mit dem Zweck, die Gedenkstätten als Zeugen für die Verbrechen des Nationalsozialismus, als Orte der Erinnerung an die Leiden der Opfer und als Lernorte für künftige Generationen zu erhalten und zu gestalten.
