La Courte Échelle is an independent children’s bookstore and toy shop in central Rennes, located at 26–30 rue Vasselot. It brings together books, play, creativity and thoughtful gifts for children and young people. Its bookselling range includes picture books, first readers, novels for ages 8–12 and teenagers, as well as children’s magazines, themed selections and recommendations from its reading groups. The shop also offers toys for babies and young children, decorative items, birthday products, mobiles and lamps, plus creative activities for children from 18 months and up. Families can rent games, and the bookstore operates an online shop.
La Courte Échelle also creates opportunities to share stories and ideas beyond the shelves. Its programme includes author meetings, readings, workshops, children’s activities and events held with local cultural partners. Reading committees invite young people to discover books and discuss their favourites. The store is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
