Louisiana Illuminator is an independent and nonprofit news organization that aims to shed light on the decision-making process in Baton Rouge and its impact on the lives of ordinary Louisianans, especially those who are marginalized or impoverished. Their website provides readers with comprehensive investigative reports, news stories, commentary, and news briefs to help them navigate and understand state policies and their consequences. Unlike traditional political reporting, Louisiana Illuminator focuses on the real-life implications of decisions made by political leaders and their effects on local communities, rather than on the politicians themselves.

While based in Baton Rouge, the organization recognizes that the consequences of these decisions extend beyond the capital and are felt throughout the state. Their mission is to uncover both the successes and failures of Louisiana's government, while highlighting examples of good governance and exposing corruption. Louisiana Illuminator is affiliated with States Newsroom, a national nonprofit organization, and is supported by grants as well as a coalition of donors and readers
