About Lana Tannir Lana Tannir is a National Geographic Explorer, iLCP Emerging League Member, nature conservation photographer, and biologist from Croatia, currently based in Munich, Germany. As a World Animal Protection and Girls Who Click partner photographer, her photographs focus on telling stories of the intersection of humans with nature. Thereby, she aims to raise awareness and advance education to incite global change. Cover Story in Oceanographic Magazine January 17, 2026 The harbour porpoise is one of the smallest whale species and a key indicator of marine health in the North and Baltic Seas. Exposed to mounting anthropogenic pressures, populations today are declining in the Baltic Sea, while in the North Sea they are shifting southward. What can be done to safeguard this whale’s future? Article in ProWildlife December 1, 2025 Harbour porpoises in the North and Baltic Seas face a three‑fold threat from ghost nets, by‑catch, and overfishing, jeopardizing their survival despite existing legal protections. I authored a commentary on this issue for Pro Wildlife, an organization dedicated to conserving biodiversity and protecting wildlife. The feature showcases the latest research and conservation efforts to protect this little whale, highlighting key threats and protection efforts.
