La Navale is a Marseille-based association and museum dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Provence’s shipbuilding and ship-repair industries. Founded in 1982 by former Marseille ship-repair workers as the Association Culturelle de la Réparation Navale, it adopted the name La Navale in 2019 and now brings together around one hundred members. Its exhibition explores the people, skills and engineering behind the region’s maritime heritage, including ship-lengthening, traditional caulking, port equipment and ship machinery.
Visitors can see historic engines, animated models and archival materials, with guided tours led by former industry workers. The association also records oral histories, digitizes archives, restores models, hosts exhibitions and educational workshops, welcomes school groups, and provides free access to a library. La Navale publishes a free monthly web magazine, La Gazette, and organizes events and outings.
Located in a 420-square-metre space in Marseille, the museum is generally open on Wednesdays from 2 to 5 p. m. ; group visits and visits at other times can be arranged by appointment
