The Verein für Landeskunde im Saarland e.V. (VLS) is an open, cross-border society dedicated to the history and regional studies of Saarland. It aims to encourage interest in local history, support and publish scholarly research, collect cultural heritage, and promote historic preservation. Members and nonmembers alike are welcome to attend its talks and public events, which share the society’s research with a broad audience.
The VLS brings together specialist working groups covering subjects such as archaeology, archives, mining, genealogy, heraldry, art and military history, dialect, transport, folklore, and Saarland’s economic history. Its activities also include study trips, a regular gathering, and projects exploring the region and its communities. To support research, the society provides a reference library, digital library, databases, and an online information resource, alongside its VLS-Info newsletter and archive. The website features articles, reports, event listings, and information on exhibitions and other regional activities. Through its publications, research resources, and public program, the VLS serves people interested in Saarland’s heritage and the wider history of the border region.
