National Economic Supply NES

The Federal Office for National Economic Supply (FONES) is part of Switzerland’s National Economic Supply (NES), a network that also brings together other federal offices, cantonal representatives and business. Its mission is to help ensure that people in Switzerland can access essential goods and services during severe shortages or crises that the economy cannot resolve on its own.

Working with public authorities and industry, NES prepares measures to protect the country’s supply in six key areas: food, energy, therapeutic products, information and communication technologies, logistics and industry. Its work includes assessing supply conditions, monitoring procurement risks, supporting critical supply chains and preparing interventions when disruptions threaten essential services. Measures may include authorising temporary withdrawals from mandatory reserves, as seen with diesel and aviation fuel.

The organisation also addresses shortages of vital medicines and medical products, tracks supply disruptions and publishes updates, media releases and a newsletter. Through coordination and advance planning, FONES and its partners aim to strengthen Switzerland’s resilience and maintain the availability of goods and services essential to everyday life.
