Lanka Upcycles is a brand that aims to make a positive impact by addressing two pressing issues in Sri Lanka - the growing amount of plastic waste and the lack of job opportunities for women. Their story began in 2012 with the creation of their very first product, the Rice & Carry bag, which is made from upcycled rice bags and spice sacks. At first, people were skeptical about buying a bag made from trash, but today, Lanka Upcycles upcycles over 60,000 rice bags and spice sacks, as well as 120,000 plastic bottles per year.

They have also provided employment to 40 women from rural villages, paying them fair wages. Lanka Upcycles seeks to improve the livelihoods of communities on Sri Lanka's East coast. They offer local solutions to the global waste crisis, create steady jobs for women from rural areas, and promote Fair Trade principles both locally and globally.

They are a fully approved member of the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) and adhere to the 10 Fair Trade principles. These principles ensure opportunities for disadvantaged producers, transparency, fair trading practices, fair payment, no child or forced labor, gender equity, good working conditions, capacity building, promotion of Fair Trade, and respect for the environment.
