About LA PovertyDepartment
LAPD, or Los Angeles Poverty Department, is a groundbreaking arts organization founded in 1985 by John Malpede. Being the first performance group in the nation made up primarily of homeless individuals, LAPD aims to empower and uplift the marginalized community of Skid Row, Los Angeles, which is known for its high poverty rates and homeless population. LAPD became a catalyst for change by engaging in conversations and collaborations with advocates, residents, and social service professionals.
They firmly believed in the potential for improving Skid Row by tapping into the skills and talents of the people who live there. The organization's history is intertwined with successful efforts to preserve the existing housing in Skid Row. By proposing innovative alternatives to urban renewal plans that would have displaced residents, LAPD and community advocates promoted the renovation and expansion of single room occupancy hotels, alongside the provision of essential social services.
At LAPD, you can support their mission by shopping for books, including The Real Deal Documentary and performance DVDs. Your contribution will help continue their impactful work
