LAR is an association that aims to make a difference in Portuguese society by addressing social inequalities. Their project focuses on integrating refugee and migrant families into depopulated villages across Portugal. Currently, their pilot project is taking place in the village of Ima in Guarda, with the goal of finding solutions to various contemporary issues.

LAR's approach revolves around promoting intercultural exchange, sustainable agriculture, and rural development to ensure the comprehensive integration of these families and provide them with a brighter future in Portugal. With approximately 590,338 foreign residents in Portugal, many are at risk of poverty or social exclusion, particularly those from non-EU countries. Additionally, between December 2015 and December 2019, Portugal welcomed 2,285 refugees, although more than half did not remain in the country.

LAR's mission is to create a supportive environment for these vulnerable individuals, offering housing rehabilitation, community services, and sociocultural integration programs. LAR also actively addresses two major challenges faced by rural areas in Portugal: depopulation and an aging population. By integrating families into deserted villages, LAR not only encourages population growth in rural areas but also provides psychosocial support to local communities.

Their goal is to build resilient communities based on cooperation and mutual respect. Moreover, LAR is committed to promoting ecological sustainability in rural regions. They have initiated an agricultural project for four members of each hosted family, focusing on sustainable farming practices that contribute to environmental regeneration and the preservation of rural landscapes and biodiversity.
