About La Savane des Esclaves
La Savane des Esclaves is a historical and cultural museum in Les Trois-Îlets, Martinique, created by local history enthusiast Gilbert Larose to preserve the island’s heritage and pass its stories on to future generations. Its self-guided visit, which takes around 1.5 hours, explores roughly 400 years of Martinican history through reconstructed villages and gardens. Visitors can discover a Kalinago village, areas illustrating enslaved people’s lives on plantations, and the traditional Village Antan Lontan, with Creole and medicinal gardens depicting life after emancipation.
The museum presents the histories, knowledge, and traditions of the island’s Indigenous peoples and the diverse communities that shaped Martinique. It also introduces visitors to Ti Gilbé, Gilbert Larose’s storytelling persona, through comics and books published by the Éditions Ti Gilbé. Further reading on Martinican history and culture is available, alongside Martinican products in the online shop. The site also offers homemade juices and ice cream, and shares demonstrations such as traditional cocoa-stick making. La Savane des Esclaves welcomes individual visitors and groups, including schools and associations.
