About Caltrans District 1
The Last Chance Grade Project, initiated by Caltrans in March 2014, aims to address the ongoing challenges posed by landslides on US 101. A collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, this project focuses on ensuring the safety and reliability of the highway while preserving the region's vital economic, environmental, and cultural resources. The project has undergone extensive studies, including the Engineered Feasibility Study and the Project Study Report, which have identified potential improvement projects and alternative routes.
Recent geotechnical and environmental assessments are ongoing to ascertain the viability of these alternatives and mitigate risks associated with geological activity. With a strong emphasis on community involvement, stakeholder workshops have been conducted to refine the analysis of project alternatives. As part of its commitment to maintaining the highway, Caltrans has undertaken multiple emergency repairs following damaging storms, with ongoing efforts to enhance long-term stability.
