LAST (Latin American Sea Turtles) Association, formerly known as WIDECAST-Costa Rica, is a Costa Rican group dedicated to the conservation of sea turtles. With 11 members and a directive board of 5, we work passionately to make a positive impact on sea turtle conservation. As a member of WIDECAST, an international scientific network, we collaborate with country coordinators from over 40 countries in the wider Caribbean region.

Our organization undertakes various programs to create a harmonious coexistence between humans and sea turtles. On the Caribbean and Southern Pacific coasts of Costa Rica, we have established conservation and research initiatives. In Cahuita, Moin, and Pacuare beaches, we focus on protecting the nesting sites of leatherback, green, and hawksbill turtles.

In the Osa Peninsular, we work towards the restoration of mangrove forests, sea grass beds, and study the rare Eastern Pacific hawksbill turtles. Additionally, we have developed a voluntourism project that trains local partners to host volunteers in community homestays, creating alternative livelihoods and reducing pressure on turtles and their habitats. We actively monitor reefs, train park rangers in turtle nesting monitoring, and educate local students about marine and coastal conservation.

Our contributions extend beyond local efforts as we also advise the government on marine environments, collaborate with international networks, and publish articles to enhance knowledge about the ocean and its diverse marine life.
