About Law Commission Te Aka Matua o te Ture
The Law Commission is an Independent Crown Entity committed to reviewing New Zealand law and making recommendations to the government to improve it. With the aim of making the law more accessible and easier to understand, the Commission advises the Minister of Justice and government agencies on legal matters. They actively seek public input through publishing Issues Papers and inviting submissions before making recommendations to the Minister.
These recommendations are then presented in a report to Parliament, and the government determines whether and how to amend the law. Unlike other state sector agencies, the Law Commission operates independently, without direct government direction. Their work is guided by a commitment to consultation and promoting public discussion on areas of law they review.
