About Carnegie Las Campanas Observatory
Las Campanas Observatory is a premier astronomical facility under the Carnegie Institution for Science, strategically located in the Atacama Desert of Chile. Established in 1969, the observatory provides exceptional access to the southern skies, including the Magellanic Clouds and the Milky Way. It boasts state-of-the-art telescopes, including the Swope 1-meter and the du Pont 2.
5-meter telescopes, as well as twin 6. 5-meter Magellan telescopes, recognized as part of the next generation of large observatories. The observatory is also the future site of the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), which will feature seven segmented mirrors, making it one of the largest telescopes worldwide.
