LeaRn4LIFE is a Portugal–Spain partnership project focused on building knowledge and training to reduce health risks associated with radon exposure. Coordinated by the Portuguese Environment Agency, it brings together the University of Coimbra and the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering in Portugal, and the University of Cantabria in Spain. The initiative explains that radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas from rocks and soils, and that indoor concentrations vary with geological conditions, building construction and use.
Its resources help people understand why measurement is needed, since maps indicate susceptibility but cannot establish actual indoor levels. LeaRn4LIFE provides guidance on measuring radon in homes and workplaces, including detector placement, monitoring periods and the importance of accredited testing services for workplaces. It also shares information on reducing exposure through remedial measures in existing buildings and preventive measures during construction.
Through training programmes, events, work packages, newsletters, articles and scientific publications, the project supports professional learning and wider public awareness of radon risks
