L'Echiquier Français

L’Echiquier Français is a Lille-based brand founded in 2019 by craftsman Bernard Bourgain, bringing together his enthusiasm for chess and hands-on making. The company creates artisan chessboards in France, combining traditional craftsmanship with carefully selected materials. Each board is unique and individually numbered, with leather squares set into frames made from regional woods such as oak, cherry and ash. The leather is sourced from Italy or the Netherlands, while the wood comes from regional forestry operations. The designs highlight the natural character and tactile appeal of these materials.

The brand’s collection includes several 40-by-40-centimetre models, with oak, ash or cherry frames and leather squares, as well as a larger oak board measuring 48 by 48 centimetres. Customers can browse and purchase the boards through the online boutique. Orders are delivered by Colissimo, with delivery stated as within 15 working days; payment is available by credit card, bank transfer or cheque. Alongside making and selling chessboards, Bourgain has also promoted chess through local gatherings at Lille’s Wazemmes market halls.
