Lectica, an educational non-profit located in the United States, has a simple mission—supporting optimal development. According to Theo Dawson, Lectica’s founder, the kind of learning that supports optimal development involves real-world practice. She argues that when we repeatedly apply knowledge in real-world contexts, it becomes richly embedded in our neural networks. Because practice involves the whole person, what we learn in this way is enriched with social, sensory, affective, and kinesthetic connections. Learning of this kind is also known as embodied learning. Lectica has shown that embodied learning enhances and accelerates development (Dawson, 2021), and because it leverages the brain’s built-in motivational system for learning, it’s way more fun than accumulating factual knowledge. Lectica delivers assessments and learning tools for a variety of applications in schools and organizations. About Lectica
Lectica is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization focused on human development and the practical measurement of learning and mental skills. Its approach, described as Lectica First, assesses capabilities relevant to real-world roles and curricula rather than relying primarily on content knowledge or unrelated problem-solving. The organization offers Lectical Assessments and related tools for leadership development, recruitment, role-fit analysis, team development, and education. Lectica Inside is a talent-development toolkit designed to help employees strengthen autonomous learning through collaborative, real-world practice.
