About Legal Aid Board
Legal Aid Board is an independent organization established in 1979, providing civil legal aid, advice, family mediation services, and managing three ad-hoc legal aid schemes related to criminal matters. The board, comprising a chairperson, twelve members, and a Chief Executive, operates across 48 offices nationwide with approximately 450 staff members. Their mission is to facilitate the resolution of civil disputes by offering efficient legal aid and mediation services.
Legal Aid Board focuses on civil legal aid and advice, catering to individuals who cannot afford a solicitor. Services expanded to family mediation since 2011. While the board administers criminal legal aid schemes, they do not provide legal aid to defendants in criminal cases.
Headquartered in Co Kerry and Dublin, Legal Aid Board operates law centers, mediation offices, and a research facility. Their role does not extend to providing legal aid for criminal prosecutions, which falls under the jurisdiction of the courts and private practice solicitors
