The Lemur Project, initiated in 2000 by the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and the Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at Carnegie Mellon University, is a pioneering initiative in the field of language modeling and information retrieval. With contributions from many students and staff, the project's flagship product is the Lemur Toolkit, which comprises a suite of software tools and search engines tailored for research in statistical language models. The project later expanded to include the Indri search engine for large-scale search applications, the Lemur Query Log Toolbar to capture user interactions, and various ClueWeb datasets for web search research.
The Lemur Project's major software updates are typically released biannually, while minor updates occur as needed. Additionally, the project invites contributions from its wide community. Supported by numerous National Science Foundation grants and previous backing from the Advanced Research and Development Activity, the Lemur Project is a vital resource for researchers in information retrieval and language technology
