About Leros Military History
Leros Military History is a heritage project dedicated to documenting and preserving the island of Leros’s military history and its monuments. The site explores the island’s strategic role in the eastern Mediterranean, particularly during the Italian occupation from 1912 to 1943 and the Battle of Leros in 1943. Its historical coverage describes the construction of Italian naval, air and military facilities, including the seaplane base, submarine base, Centro Radio Lero and the planned town of Porto Lago, now Lakki.
Visitors can learn about batteries, tunnels, military installations, airfields, cemeteries, memorials and underwater monuments through dedicated articles and collections. The site also features war museums, exhibitions, publications and personal stories gathered from local accounts. Its resources highlight the island’s fortifications, including a network of 25 batteries, and recount the events and human losses of the 52-day bombardment and subsequent battle.
Leros Military History invites people to participate in its work and receive updates on initiatives to save and highlight the island’s monuments of recent history.
