LibreSSL is a secure communications and cryptography software project that began in 2014 as a fork of OpenSSL. Its goals are to modernize the codebase, improve security, and follow best-practice development processes. Development takes place primarily within the OpenBSD source tree, where the project applies the care associated with OpenBSD. The software is also regularly packaged for use on other operating systems, including Linux, FreeBSD, and Windows.
LibreSSL releases bring together several components for developers and system users. The libcrypto library provides cryptographic fundamentals, while libssl supplies TLS functionality. The project also offers libtls, a newer TLS library designed to make it easier to build applications that handle security correctly. Additional utilities include openssl, nc, and ocspcheck.
The project publishes stable releases and provides release and support information through its website, alongside development resources and bug reporting. LibreSSL receives financial support from the OpenBSD Foundation and the OpenBSD Project, and invites people to contribute to its efforts.
