Lichfield District Council is dedicated to transforming Lichfield city centre into a vibrant and attractive destination for residents, businesses, and visitors alike. As part of their efforts, they have implemented a pedestrianisation trial through an experimental traffic regulation order (ETRO) that will run for up to 18 months. The goal of this trial, which started in March 2023, is to assess whether pedestrianisation can enhance the safety of the city centre for shoppers, workers, and tourists, while also reducing air pollution and promoting sustainable travel.

Based on valuable feedback from city visitors, shoppers, blue badge holders, and local businesses, the trial restrictions have been updated to improve effectiveness. Starting from July 31, 2023, specific city streets will be closed to vehicles from midnight on Wednesdays to Sundays until midnight. However, loading is permitted between 9pm and 12 noon for businesses, and off-street parking facilities remain accessible within the trial area.

In line with regulations, this initiative will undergo a new six-month consultation period to gather feedback from all users and stakeholders. During the initial phase, drivers entering the pedestrianised zone on Thursdays to Sundays will be notified of the restrictions until new traffic signage is installed. Once the signage is in place, strict enforcement will commence.

Residents, businesses, blue badge holders, and stakeholders are encouraged to actively participate in the consultation process. Details on how to provide feedback will be announced soon.
